- Wondering how long I’d be single? Torture.
- Knowing if Brian’s the ONE to marry. A leap of faith.
- Retiring from a career…and paycheck. Unpredictable.
- Leaving the house with two toddlers and an infant. An act of God.
- Moving our family across the nation. A wing and a prayer.
- Watching my mother suffer with ALS. Gut wrenching.
- Navigating the mind of our tween girl. A mystery.
- Prioritizing health and fitness as a lifestyle. Never-ending.
- Caring for my 86-year-old Dad with Alzheimer’s. Patience, again and again.
- Balancing mom-life, wife-life, missionary-life and a bit of me-life. A constant battle.
No matter the season, life can be HARD. If it’s going to be HARD, you might as well go BIG or go home. Back in the day, loading up 3 small kids in the car for a quick Target run was a small miracle in effort, emotion and patience. If going 5 minutes away from home was going to be that monumental, then I might as well load them up on a plane for a 16 – 20-hour flight half way around the world. Both are equally HARD. So why not? It’s what we do. It’s who we are.
This gritty mind-set has taken my husband Brian and I to the ends of the earth and back for more than a decade. We don’t think anything of taking our kids to developing nations, or leaving them home and going without them. Both come with their share of challenges and rewards. A mission trip isn’t a once in a lifetime experience for us, It’s a lifestyle. It’s not the exception to our routine, it is our routine. It is part of our daily rhythm and flow of life. Scheduling first what matters most. It’s what we do. It’s who we are.
To some, traveling around the globe sounds glamourous. Physically, not so much. Spiritually, beyond measure. The logistics involved with caring for the girls when Brian and I travel is complicated. 30 long hours of flight time can make even the fittest of folks weary. Bugs, dirt, and filth can set this OCD couple into a tail spin in no time flat. Bottom line, it’s a rough and dirty world out there. But our WHY, our reason for going, overshadows any discomfort, pain and suffering we may endure. There is PEACE knowing we are fulfilling God’s call on our life. God speaks. We obey. We wouldn’t have it any other way. There is no greater JOY. It’s what we do. It’s who we are.
Sometimes the multitudes flock in droves to hear the American speak. Some taking busses for days, sleeping on dirt floors, or walking for miles, barefoot, in anticipation. Looking out into the sea of hundreds of faces who expectantly sit on the edge of their chair waiting, pen in hand, expectant to hear a word from the Lord…through us? It’s humbling and exhilarating. Other times six tired, broken and lost folks wonder into an empty room unsure and disconnected. They stare off into space, talk with their neighbor or even take a nap, unaware they will hear a word from the Lord…through us? It’s humbling and exhilarating. We travel far and wide to speak to the multitudes or for just ONE. Both are worth the trip. It’s what we do. It’s who we are.
Personal development is important to us. Through books we’ve gained knowledge. Through sermons we’ve gained understanding. Through prayer we’ve gained insight. Through the word we’ve gained revelation. Through friends we’ve gained accountability. We invest in ourselves so we can invest in others. We are better because of it. But, what about those who have no access? Those who have no resources? Those who have no discipleship? Those are the ones who have captured our hearts. We see their potential. We see their gifts. We see their impact and influence. It’s our mission to help them discover it for themselves. The chosen ones in developing nations are loved and called by their heavenly father. They are anointed and appointed. Equipped and enabled. To live, breathe and serve powerfully under the shelter of the most high God. It’s our JOY to help them tap into their potential. It’s what we do. It’s who we are.
Without vision the People perish. What makes you happy? What makes you angry? What do you dream about? All have been planted in your heart by God – for a reason. Take pause. Take inventory. You were created to solve a very specific problem here on planet earth. First, you must make it a priority to discover your PURPOSE. There is more at stake than you realize. Letting time slip by in a life-sentence of mediocracy, comfort and a status quo was not why God created you. There is HOPE no matter your age or stage of life. You were made for so much more. Fearfully. Wonderfully. Made. People need to hear YOUR voice. Someone. Today. Needs the gift that only YOU can offer. Someone. Today. Needs the blessing that only YOU can provide. Relentlessly pursue your purpose until you can own it with CONFIDENCE. Without YOU, they will PERISH. It’s what you do. It’s who you are?
